Six Quick Questions to Help You Identify Red-Tailed Hawks

They're one of the most familiar raptor species in North America, but they can still be tricky to ID.

Red-tailed Hawks can be vexing birds. We tend to think of Northern Harriers and Rough-legged Hawks as hovering raptors, but Red-tails will also hover聽when the wind and occasion calls for it.聽They're聽bulky, all-purpose predators聽that聽primarily feed on mammals,聽but they're nimble enough to catch聽pigeons, too.聽They also vary in plumage based on age,聽range, and individual traits. You can have Red-tails with no belly band, Red-tails that are chocolate brown from head to toe, and even Red-tails without an聽actual red tail.

What can make聽all of these聽variables聽even more聽frustrating is that these birds are聽everywhere. In fact, Red-tails are so widespread and common聽that more often than not, when you see a聽raptor that you can't identify, chances are good it's a Red-Tailed Hawk. But how do you know for sure?聽Next time you're trying to figure out if you have聽a Red-tail, use聽these six basic questions to work your way through the ID.聽

Is the tail聽red?

Sure, it's obvious, but always check the tail. Most adult Red-tailed Hawks have a rusty-red聽upperside, though the lighting might affect how much of it you can see from below. Juvenile Red-tails often have brown tails crossed by darker horizontal bars, and in the West, many adults have some narrow barring on their red tails. The tails on the Harlan's subspecies are pale and mottled, and usually lack any sort of red.

Is the bird beefy?

Another聽great way to start is shape:聽Is the raptor in question hefty and sturdy聽looking? That helps you聽eliminate smaller, daintier聽raptors聽like falcons and Sharp-shinned and Cooper鈥檚 Hawks.聽Broad,聽beefy hawks are generally classified as Buteos, and聽the Red-tail is聽one of聽the beefiest.

Do the shoulders聽form a white V?

One of the best聽tips聽for IDing聽birds of prey is to聽look at their backs. Do any of the larger shoulder feathers (also known as scapulars)聽look white? If you notice a white V,聽that's a聽classic sign of a聽Red-tailed Hawk. But there are exceptions. Out聽west when young Swainson鈥檚 Hawks first return from spring migration, they, too, can have white patches. In those cases, look at the wingtips. Do the tips not quite extend down to the tail? Then it鈥檚 for sure a Red-tailed Hawk. If they do reach the end of the聽tail, it's聽a Swainson鈥檚 Hawk.

If you鈥檝e asked yourself these questions and still aren鈥檛 convinced, keep going.

Is it wearing a dark bib?

Many raptors sport a dark bib, including young Bald Eagles and Broad-winged and Swainson鈥檚 Hawks. Red-tailed Hawks may have a聽dark belly band or be completely dark brown or blackish in the front, but they will never聽have a bib-like feature.

Does the bird聽look like it's wearing pants?

Red-tailed Hawks don't have feathers that go all the way down to their toes. With聽鈥渂ooted鈥 species,聽such as Ferruginous or Rough-legged Hawks, the color is so different from the breast that聽the bird looks like it's wearing pants, even when soaring.聽

Does it have the face of a Muppet?

If you've got a perched hawk, take a good, hard look at its face. Is the mouth huge with yellow in the corners? Does the beak look overly big for its face? If so, you've probably got yourself a Ferruginous Hawk, not a Red-tail.聽

So there it is. While we didn't hit on聽the really聽tricky Red-tail聽variations,聽like聽albinos and leucistics, keep these questions in mind the聽next time you think you might have a Red-Tailed Hawk.聽Even if it doesn't turn out to be one, these same聽clues could聽still help you identify your mystery raptor.聽
